AMR/AMI Utility Metering
Tadiran pioneered the use of bobbin-type lithium thionyl chloride (Li-SOCl2) batteries used by water, gas and electric utilities.
Our ultra-long-life bobbin-type LiSOCl2 batteries were specifically designed to power AMR/AMI meters, including those equipped with two-way wireless communications and to power memory and real time clock back-up power systems for GSM communication modules.
After 40+ years in the field, Tadiran remains the utility metering industry’s #1 supplier of ultra-long-life lithium batteries that power the latest generation of mechanical and ultrasonic meters designed to last 20-30 years, lasting as long as the meter without the need for expensive battery replacement. This ultra-long-life power solution enables utility managers to improve their return on investment (ROI) by reducing the total cost of ownership while increasing system reliability.
These remote wireless devices are often powered by PulsesPlus batteries that combine a standard bobbin-type LiSOCl2 cell that delivers low-level background current with a patented hybrid layer capacitor (HLC) that delivers the high pulses required for two-way wireless communications. The patented HLC offers the added benefit of a unique end-of-life voltage plateau that can be interpreted to deliver low-battery status alerts. This feature enables more routine battery replacements by eliminating the chaos and uncertainty of potential large scale systemwide battery failures that interrupt billing cycles and deactivate remote shut-off and turn-on capabilities.
For situations where a rechargeable Li-ion battery is required, Tadiran offers TLI Series industrial grade rechargeable Li-ion batteries that last for up to 20 years and 5,000 full recharge cycles. These industrial grade rechargeable Li-ion batteries are ideal for use in smart electricity meters that require back-up battery power to support emergency communications during a power failure and other low-power applications.
Tadiran batteries are also being combined with AI-enhanced communications technology to revitalize and maintain our nation’s hard infrastructure. These applications range from transportation to energy exploration and distribution, solid waste and wastewater management, public utilities, smart cities, and environmental monitoring, to name a few.
FEATURED APPLICATION
When Aclara, formerly Hexagram, began replacing older meters with newer generation devices they tested the original Tadiran batteries and found that they had retained a significant amount of unused capacity even after 28+ years in the field.
