Oceanographic

TADIRAN batteries have been proven in all types of oceanographic applications.

Tadiran bobbin-type lithium thionyl chloride (LiSOCl2) batteries are utilized in a variety of offshore and oceanographic applications, including radio distress beacons, emergency locating transmitters, (ELT), GPS equipment, SARSAT/COSPAS distress beacons, mobile satellite communications links, ocean bottom seismic devices, sonobuoys, transponders and data loggers.

Icebergs at the North Pole

For example, NOAA/PMEL chose Tadiran PulsesPlus™ batteries to power experiments near the North Pole that measured wind, temperature, sunlight and ice thickness on icebergs. The measuring device was manufactured by Oceantronics to replace a battery pack formerly made with 380 alkaline D cells, and weighing 54kg, with a far smaller battery pack consisting of 32 lithium thionyl chloride D cells and four hybrid layer capacitors, weighing just 3.2kg.

The switch to PulsesPlus battery technology resulted in significant size weight reductions of over 90% along with comparable operating life, which allowed for greater ease of transport and handling, which is critical important when transporting equipment in frigid Arctic waters. Additionally, a number of these smaller lithium packs could be utilized in place of the much larger alkaline pack, which would enable the system’s operational life to be extended many fold.

Acoustic Current Meters

Tadiran batteries were also utilized in Nortek Aquadopp acoustic current meters and profilers deployed by the Canadian Wildlife Service to study the effects of tidal currents on eider ducks located in Hudson Bay near the open ocean. Use of a PulsesPlus battery pack enabled capacity to be increased to nearly 3.3 times that of an equivalently sized alkaline battery pack.

These two examples demonstrate the proven ability of Tadiran lithium thionyl chloride batteries to deliver unrivaled power and performance in remote oceanographic applications.
