Low Temperature
The cold chain is supported by TADIRAN LiSOCl2 low temperature batteries.
Tadiran bobbin-type LiSOCl2 Low temperature batteries are preferred for use in the cold chain because they deliver the highest specific energy (energy per unit weight) and energy density (energy per unit volume) of any battery type. Lithium cells, all of which use a non-aqueous electrolyte, also have nominal open circuit voltages of between 1.7 and 3.9V. Lithium cells also feature extended operating temperature ranges, made possible by the absence of water and the chemical and physical stability of the materials.
TADIRAN low temperature batteries are able to handle temperatures down to -100°C
Bobbin-type LiSOCl2 cells offer the widest temperature range, making them ideal for use with high temperature autoclave sterilization as well as in the cold chain, where consistent temperatures as low as -80°C need to be maintained in order to preserve tissue samples, transplant organs, medical supplies, pharmaceuticals and food that are frozen or shipped in dry ice. Tadiran Low temperature batteries tested its bobbin-type LiSOCl2 cells in a cryogenic chamber, subjecting these batteries to progressively lower temperatures down to -100°C, and the cells continued to operate as necessary.
Of all available lithium chemistries, bobbin-type LiSOCl2 (lithium thionyl chloride) our low temperature batteries stands apart as being particularly well-suited for applications requiring a steady low current (micro amps to low milli amps) for extended period of time (up to 40 years) due to its high energy density, high capacity, and very low self-discharge rate.
Tadiran LiSOCl2 chemistry also performs well in extreme heat, making them ideal for use with autoclave or chemical sterilization systems. For example, Awarepoint battery-powered radio frequency identification (RFID) real time location systems (RTLS) continually monitor the location and status of medical equipment throughout medical facilities without having to remove the battery prior to autoclave sterilization.
Tadiran batteries can be modified for use in the cold chain, where consistent temperatures as low as -80°C need to be maintained in order to preserve tissue samples, transplant organs, medical supplies, pharmaceuticals and food that are frozen or shipped in dry ice.
